Chic

Shikar is a tiger hunt from the back of elephants , practiced in the courts of Indian Maharajas. The latter's passion for luxury gradually turned it into a solemn departure on elephants to the jungle . Many distinguished colonial figures participated in the chic, mostly British, who were guests of one or another lord - vice-kings, famous hunters, army officers. The British who owned India favored the Shikars, believing that they help the Indians splash out aggression, replacing wars.

Hunt

Since the elephant rises about three meters above the terrain, being on its back allows hunters and their companions to have a good view, shoot from top to bottom and provides much greater security than hunting tigers on foot or from a horse (but although the tiger is usually not solved attack this large animal, there have been cases of a tiger jumping onto the back of an elephant). The advent of firearms in India has made the shikars even more effective and safe. Along the way, with the tiger hunt, they also caught other game - animals and birds for the table.

Preparation

Elephants tend to panic when in danger, so they were specially trained not to be afraid of the tiger by using a tame animal - first in a cage, and then on a leash in the jungle.

Luxury

Over time, the chic became a luxury parade and a solemn social event - trying to please the noble guests, the Maharajas resorted to tricks that made the risk of unsuccessful hunting minimal. When measuring the skin length of prey tigers, it was also not without fraud. The best European weapons of that time, a lot of decorated elephants, a large retinue with women and a rich table were taken on such a hunt, then trips to Rolls Royces began , which various maharajas ordered about a thousand in total from the principalities of India [1] .
