Jordanian-Saudi relations

In 1924, the Hashemite dynasty was ousted by Abdul-Aziz II from Hijaz , which caused outrage among the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. After the end of World War II, relations between the two monarchies became relatively friendly, especially between 1955 and 1990. After the overthrow of the Hashemite dynasty in Iraq took place in 1958, Saudi Arabia provided political support to Jordan. In 1967, after the end of the Six Day War , Riyadh provided economic assistance to Jordan to help it overcome the consequences of the war. Saudi Arabia also mediated conflicts between Jordan and its various Arab opponents, including the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) in 1970-1971 and Syria in 1980 ^[2] .

In 1990, Jordan's refusal to support Saudi Arabia during its confrontation with Iraq shocked and outraged Riyadh. The Saudis rated this position of Jordan as a stab in the back. The Saudi government reacted harshly: all grants and loans to Jordan were terminated; the sale of oil at low prices was discontinued; import of goods from Jordan was limited by duties. After Iraq was defeated , Riyadh rejected Jordan's initiative to restore friendly relations. In the 1990s, relations between these countries were very strained. In the 2000s, relations between Jordan and Saudi Arabia returned to normal, countries again began to cooperate on the main points in the economy and foreign policy ^{[3] [4]} .
