First introduced at the Tokyo Motor Show in October 1987, Pao was available with or without a textile hatch, and initially appeared on the market not under the Nissan brand name and only by reservation from January 15 to April 14, 1989 [1] .
Due to the fact that Pao, Figaro, Be-1 and S-Cargo cars were built at the Pike factory, they are known as “Pike cars”.
In 2011, journalist Phil Patton, who wrote for the New York Times , called these cars "the height of postmodernism " [2] and "shameless retro, randomly combining elements of the Citroën 2CV , Renault 4 , Mini [and] Fiat 500. " [2]
History
The car became part of the Pike series, it was designed as a retro city car on Be-1 molds. She received external door hinges, similar to the 1960s Austin Mini , which became fashionable in Japan, a removable fabric roof, like the Citroën 2CV , and a two-wing rear door, like on the first British hatchback of the Austin A40 Farina Countryman [3] [4] . Be-1, Pao, Figaro and S-Cargo were attempts to create cars with a design suitable for Panasonic , Sony and other personal electronics products [5] .
The 1.0 liter (987 cc) MA10S engine was mounted from a March / Micra in combination with a three-speed automatic or five-speed manual transmission. The engine produced 52 horsepower. (38 kW) at 6000 rpm and 75 Nm of torque at 3600 rpm [6] .
The chassis received rack and pinion steering, an independent suspension with struts in front and a four-link with springs at the rear. Front disc brakes, rear drum brakes. The tire size is 155 / SR12.
The design of Pike cars (with the exception of Figaro) is usually attributed to Naoki Sakai, who also participated in the creation of Toyota cars, which repeated the Pike series [5] .
