In 1985, a new academic research institute of informatics and automation (LIIAN) was organized on the basis of LNIVC. The director of this institute is its actual organizer - the head of the Leningrad Scientific and Research Center, doctor of technical sciences, professor V. M. Ponomarev. LIIAN becomes the lead organization for the program for the creation and implementation of IASU and GAP in Leningrad. Later, LIIAN received its current name SPIIRAN, "St. Petersburg Institute of Informatics and Automation of the Russian Academy of Sciences."
The Institute includes a doctoral dissertation council on the specialties 05.13.01 “System analysis, management and information processing” (technical systems) in technical sciences and 05.13.11 “Mathematical and software of computers, complexes and computer networks” in technical sciences. Institute scientists publish their work in the journal Proceedings of SPIIRAS, published four times a year.
The institute is located in the building of the former K. May gymnasium , built in 1909 - 1910 according to the project of G. D. Grimm (graduate of the 1883 gymnasium).
