The 12th mechanized battalion ( Slovak 12. (Dvanástej) mechanizovaný prápor ) is the main motorized unit of the Slovak army that is part of the elite 1st mechanized brigade of the Armed Forces of Slovakia . The battalion is under the direct command of the Ground Forces of Slovakia . Since October 2012, the unit has been part of the NATO high-readiness forces [2] . The battalion is deployed in Nitra [3] . The first commander of the battalion was Lt. Col. Stefan Aksai [4] . Prior to relocation to Nitra, the battalion was located in the cities of Topolchani and Glogovets [2] .

The unit has taken responsibility for the crisis of governance in the Slovak Republic by providing assistance to national authorities. Where the tasks of the battalion included radiation and chemical control. The plan was to further raise standards for the effective operation of the battalion [4] .
The battalion was originally designated as VÚ 9975 Nitra and transferred to the subordination of the tank brigade in Levice , after which, starting in 2000, the battalion became known as VÚ 1046 Nitra, and transferred to the subordination of the 2nd Mechanized Brigade, later transferred to the submission of the light brigade located in Topolchany. Since October 1, 2006, the battalion has been subordinate to the 1st Mechanized Brigade [5] .
The battalion is armed with several types of military equipment and weapons, including BMP-2 , Aligátor 4x4, mortars , machine guns and machine guns Sa vz. 58 [6] .
