Zita Seletsky

She began as a theater actress in 1936. From 1937 she began to film and soon became one of the most popular film actresses in Hungary. Between 1937 and 1944 she played in more than 30 films, mainly in musical comedies.

During the Second World War, driven by patriotic feelings, she began to speak out in support of the Nilaschists . She gave many patriotic solo concerts, especially in the last days of the war, when Soviet troops fought for Budapest.

October 29, 1944 she spoke at the so-called "Hungarista Est" (Hungarista Est). She performed excerpts from the poem Petefi “Get up on holy war!”. Speech sounded on the radio.

After the establishment of communist rule, Zita was declared a Nazi war criminal and fled the country to the west.

In 1947, the People’s Court sentenced her in absentia to 3 years in prison.

She lived in Italy, where she starred in the film, Argentina and the United States , but her film career ended and never revived, although Zita remained a popular concert actress.

She returned to Hungary only in 1988. In 1993, the Supreme Court of Hungary sentenced Zita and was rehabilitated.

She was awarded the Hungarian Order of Merit , 3rd degree for her invaluable contribution to the development of Hungarian culture in exile.

In 2015, the Hungarian Post Office issued a stamp dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Zita Seletsky.
