Biography
Representative of an old noble family. The son of a Prussian officer. Educated at the universities of Heidelberg , Halle and Berlin . Doctor of Sciences since 1877 (dissertation "On Perception").
In 1881, he underwent a habilitation process at the University of Halle with a thesis on “The Importance of the Poetic Element in the Philosophy of Giordano Bruno ”. From 1884 he taught at the University of Berlin, where he also lectured on the work of Richard Wagner , whose close friend and educator of his only son Siegfried he was.
He became a member of the internal "Wagnerian circle."
Died at the age of 30 from heart disease.
Works and creative activity
Despite his early death, Stein left a series of deep and original works on aesthetics and the relationship of poetry and philosophy , among them: “Ueber die Bedeutung des dichterischen Elements in der Philosophie des Giordano Bruno” (1880), “Zusammenhang zwischen Boileau und Descartes” ( 1884), Die Entstehung der neuern Aesthetik (1886), The History of Aesthetics from Boileau to Winkelmann .
Posthumously published: Vorlesungen über Aesthetik (1897), Schiller und Goethe Vorlesungen über die Aesthetik der deutschen Klassiker.
He was the author of original philosophical poems in the form of dialogue : “Helden und die Welt” (1883), with a foreword by Richard Wagner. After Stein's death, a collection of his works appeared: “Aus dem Nachlass” (1888, three dialogues from an unfinished cycle on the meaning of holiness as the highest form of heroism in history); in 1894, his three dialogues from the history of the great French revolution were published in the Bayreuther Blätter.
