Medical ethics

Medical ethics ( medical deontology ) is a discipline in the field of applied ethics that studies medical ethics, the rules and norms of the doctor’s interaction with colleagues and the patient [1] [2] . It is believed that the basic principles of medical ethics were formulated by Hippocrates ( Hippocratic Oath ).

That part of ethics, the subject of which is the doctrine of a person’s duty to another person and society as a whole, is called deontology in Russia. Medical deontology is the doctrine of the proper behavior of medical workers, contributing to the creation of the most favorable environment for the recovery of the patient. To replace the concept of “medical ethics”, the surgeon N. N. Petrov in 1944 introduced the term “medical deontology” into the Russian language ( dr. Greek. Δέον - proper, proper; λόγος - teaching), extending its principles to the activities of nurses [3] .

Thus, the medical ethics is the theoretical basis of deontology, and deontology, manifested in the actions of medical personnel, is a practical application of medical and ethical principles. The subject of the study of deontology is more voluminous than the subject of ethics, since, along with the study of morality itself, it is engaged in the study and regulation of the doctor’s relationship with society (the state), with patients and their relatives, with other doctors and paramedics. [four]

Medical deontology includes [1] [2] :

  1. Medical confidentiality issues.
  2. Measures of responsibility for the life and health of patients.
  3. Relationship problems in the medical community.
  4. Relationship problems with patients and their relatives.
  5. Rules for Intimate Relationship between Doctor and Patient, developed by the American Medical Association Ethics and Legal Committee.

The main issues of medical deontology are euthanasia , as well as the inevitable death of the patient.
