Parliamentary elections in France (1967)

The parliamentary elections of 1967 in France took place on March 5 and 12. The third National Assembly of the Fifth Republic was elected.

The context of elections and their consequences

In December 1965 , Charles de Gaulle was re-elected president of the republic as a result of general direct presidential elections . However, unexpectedly, this required a second round, where he was confronted by Francois Mitterrand . This allowed Mitterrand to become the leader of the left forces. He formed a pre-election coalition of left-wing non-communist parties, the Federation of Democratic and Socialist Left, and concluded a pre-election agreement with the Communist Party .

De Gaulle's right-wing opposition gathered in the Democratic Center under the leadership of Jean Lecanyue , another candidate in the last presidential election.

As a result of the elections, the presidential majority won by only one place. The left forces improved their positions thanks to the coordinated position. The Prime Minister was again Georges Pompidou .
