Career

Chen's acting career began in 1993. In 1998, he graduated with a master’s degree from the Central Drama Academy in Beijing and became an actor in the National Theater of China [1] . In 2001, for his role in the romantic film “Chrysanthemum Tea,” he was awarded the “Student Choice” prize as the best actor [2] . In China, Chen is best known for his role as Cao Cao in the popular historical series Three Kingdoms , which aired on Chinese television in 2010. For this role, he was awarded the Seoul International Drama Prize in the nomination "Best Actor" [3] . In 2011, Chen received a major male role in another historical television series, The Legend of Zhen Huan, which is very successful in East Asia [1] .

In 2014, Chen released his debut work as a director - the tragicomedy "Fool" about a shepherd from Northern China who is trying to rescue his son from prison. Chen himself worked on the script, which was based on the novel by Hu Xuewen "Escaping Moonlight", and played the main role in the film. The film was shown in cinemas in East Asia, Australia, New Zealand, the USA and Canada, but did not go out in China. The reason for this was the ban on the authorities because of the "immoral behavior" of one of the actors Wang Xuebin, who was arrested for drug possession. At the same time, for “Fool” Chen received the national Chinese film award “ Golden Rooster ” in 2015. After the re-filming of some episodes with Wang's participation in November 2015, the film was still released in mainland China [4] . In Taiwan, the film brought Chen two film awards, “The Golden Horse,” at once: for the best directorial debut and for the best male role [5] . At the same ceremony, Chen also received the third prize, in the nomination for "Best Actor in a Supporting Role" for participating in Nu Chengze 's film "Paradise in the Service."

Personal life

Since 2006, Chen has been married to actress Jiang Qinqin , and in January 2007 they had a son [6] .
