Biography
Grandson of the Spanish navigator Jacinto Caamagno .
He studied law and theology in the seminary of his native city, and later studied law at the University of Ecuador in Quito . The lawyer .
He was the mayor of Guayaquil . He served as the head of the customs service.
Politician, member of the liberal Catholic party of progressives.
He participated in the coup on September 8, 1876 against President Borrero , collaborated with the entrant Veintimiglia . Disappointed in the politics of the new authorities, he joined the opposition.
In 1882 he was expelled from the country for anti-government activities and left for Lima ( Peru ), where he organized a revolutionary expedition that landed on Ecuadorian territory. In mid-May, he and his detachment joined the forces that held Guayaquil under siege. The city was stormed by a combined force under the command of Caamagno, Sarasti, Alfaro and Salazar.
On October 11, 1883 he was elected interim president of Ecuador, officially took office as head of state on February 17, 1884.
In 1886, while trying to assassinate, miraculously escaped death, throwing himself into the river.
During his presidency, the country's infrastructure developed: the telegraph network and the railway expanded. The Institute of Sciences, several colleges and many new schools were also opened.
After the end of his presidency, he was Ambassador of Ecuador to the United States (1889-1890) and Governor of the province of Guayas .
As governor of his party member, President Luis Cordero , he was charged with embezzlement. Exiled to Seville in Spain, where he died in poverty on December 31, 1900.
