Representatives of the Order
The most famous plants from this order are two species from the Holly genus - Holly Holly , used since decorative times in Ancient Rome , and Paraguayan Holly , from which leaves a mate drink is made.
Classification
In the classification system APG II ( 2003 ), the order of the Ilexaceae belongs to the group of evasterida II and includes five families :
- Aquifoliaceae DC. ex. A.Rich. ( 1828 ) - Holly
- Cardiopteridaceae Blume ( 1847 ) - Cardiopteris
- Helwingiaceae Decne. ( 1836 ) - Helvingian
- Phyllonomaceae Small ( 1905 ) - Phyllonomaceae
- Stemonuraceae ( M.Roem. ) KΓ₯rehed ( 2001 ) - Stemonura
The Kronquist classification system ( 1981 ) does not include the Aquifoliales order , nor does the last three families from the list, and the Aquifoliaceae and Cardiopteridaceae families are included in the Celastrales order.
