Biography
The son of a French sergeant of the Napoleonic army, who settled in Poland in 1813. Educated at the Piarists , then entered the pedagogical courses in Warsaw.
In 1839, he founded the illegal “Patriotic Union” in Lukowa , whose activity consisted of work on self-education and agitation, which became part of the “Association of Polish People”. On his initiative, a similar organization was created in Chelm . In total conspiracy participants were about 200 people.
Soon, illegal conspiratorial organizations were discovered by the royal authorities.
Those who participated in the conspiracy were accused of trying to prepare for the beginning of the armed uprising, the creation of a republican government, the desire to abolish serfdom and universal suffrage for the peasants. The plot was discovered as a result of testimony given by a teacher in an elementary school, Lucuva .
Karol Levitta after his arrest in 1841, spent several months in the Warsaw Citadel .
After a failed escape attempt, violence was applied to him. He received 2,000 strokes with a stick, 400 shots every day, he was not allowed to sleep. The prisoner endured everything and did not betray his comrades. In connection with the betrothal of Emperor Nicholas I, all the detainees, with the exception of Levitte, were released.
Weakened after interrogation and the use of violence, Levitta, fearing to give out his comrades, decided to commit suicide . Karol Levitta set fire to the mattress and died in the fire.
Subsequently, became a symbol of unshakable courage and sacrifice for his country.
