The movie with the smell - a system according to which the audience throughout the film should feel certain smells , which in theory should help even more immerse the audience into the atmosphere of the picture.
History
Attempts to create a movie with a smell have been undertaken since 1906 , when the owner of one of the cinemas in Pennsylvania, when showing a film magazine, was waving a cloth soaked in rose oil in the hall [1] . In 1958, the Italian director Carlo Lidzani made the documentary “The Wall of China”, with a show that more than a hundred smells were fed into the hall through ventilation [1] . In 1960, the Swiss engineer Hans Laube developed the “ Smell-O-Vision ” system [2] , which in practice was used only for one film - The Scent of Mystery , directed by Jack Cardiff . This film was shown in three specially equipped cinemas: in New York , Los Angeles and Chicago . A tube was connected to each spectator's seat, and smells were sprayed centrally throughout the hall. The system worked without operator participation at pre-set time intervals of the plot of the film. However, the first shows caused not the best reviews from the audience: some complained about the loud hiss during the delivery of smells, others (especially those who were on the balcony) that the smells were not well synchronized with respect to the action on the screen, still others could not clearly feel these smells [3] . In the 1980s, the film was once shown on MTV , as well as on several local television channels. For a full viewing of this tape, viewers were advised to buy special cards at the nearest stores, by rubbing which one could smell the necessary smells along the plot [1] . Such a system was called “Scratch and sniff” ( Russian rub and smell ). In 2006, in the cinemas of Japan at the premiere of the Hollywood film “New World”, an odor generator was tested, presented by the Japanese company Mirapro, which conveyed the fragrances using a special device - a closed sphere filled with thirty-two types of aromatic oils and connected to a computer [4] . Cards - aromascopes (Aroma-Scope) were given out to viewers along with tickets to the film “ Children of Spies 4D ” [5] [6] .
