History
The history of mail in Iceland dates back to May 13, 1776, when King Christian VII , King of Denmark and, at the same time, Iceland, ordered the creation of a postal service in the country. According to the king’s order, 18 district postal administrations were formed on the island and the post of chief postmaster in Bessastadir , the residence of the Danish governor, was established [1] . Two years later, in 1778, postal ships began to run regularly between Reykjavik and Copenhagen once a year. In 1851, the number of flights was increased to three, and in 1858 to six (between April and November). Later, a postal service was established between Reykjavik and Liverpool, and since 1870, Danish postal ships began to call in the Faroe and Shetland Islands and in the northern ports of Scotland [2] .
Domestic transportation of correspondence began in 1782. Since 1831, mail was delivered eight times a year to residents of the west coast. Since 1837, this system has spread to the east coast, and since 1849 - to the southeast [2] .
On February 26, 1872, a decree was issued in Iceland on the issue of own brands. The first Icelandic postage stamps came into circulation on January 1, 1873, and at the same time, the first post offices began to open on the island. The first issue consisted of five stamps with a pattern identical to that of the Danish stamps of 1870 (crowned face value in the oval), with the name of the country “Island”.

In 1935, the postal service of Iceland and the national telephone company of Iceland were merged into a single state-owned postal and telephone company ( fig . Póstur-og-Sími letters. "Mail and Phone"). At the end of December 1997, this company was divided into two separate companies - telephone ( Isl. Landssími ) and postal ( Isl. Íslandspóstur ).
