History
Vairog Street is one of the oldest streets in Theiki . It arose at the beginning of the 20th century and was first mentioned in 1913 under the name “ Phoenix Street ” ( Feniksa iela , also Phoenix ) [2] . At that time, it started north of the Brivibas gatve , at the present Chiekurkalnsky bridge , and passed along the current Gustav Zemgal gatve , making a slight turn in the place that today is considered the beginning of Vairog Street. At the end of the 20th century, most of Vairog Street was reconstructed and incorporated into the new city highway - Gustav Zemgal Gatwe.
With both of their names - both Phoenix and Vairog - the street owes to the Riga Carriage Works , from the walls of which it started. Initially, the plant was called "Phoenix", and since 1936 - "Vairogs" ( Latvian. Vairogs - "Shield" ). Following the factory, the street was also renamed; its current name is found in documents from 1939 [2] .
In Soviet times, there was no street renaming.
