Biography
Born in the city of Vasteras , in a family of workers. Started playing in the children's theater. In 17, she became an actress of the Royal Drama Theater of Sweden ( Dramaten ). Her fame was brought to her role in the film Alfa Schöberg “ Harassment ” ( 1944 ) according to the script of Ingmar Bergman , she starred in the next film of Schöberg Iris and Lieutenant ( 1946 ). Setterling's other important acting career is the title role in the film Frida ( 1947 ), where she plays a German nurse who saved a British officer during World War II and, in gratitude, took him to the UK [1] . In 1948, Setterling starred in the Bergman film Music in the Dark .
Setterling's career lasted from the 1940s to the 1990s. Since the beginning of the 1960s, she has been trying herself in directing, the first works are the short “Voynushka” (1962) and documentaries on political topics. The full-length debut is “Love Couples” of 1964 (nomination for the Golden Palm Branch of the Cannes IFF ). Her films, including this one, are distinguished by pronounced sexuality. For Canadian television, she shot several episodes of the anthology series Hitchhiker (1985).
The penultimate role of Setterling - the role of Grandmother in the comedy thriller " Witches " ( 1989 ) based on a book by Roald Dahl - film critic Valery Kichin calls "delightful" [2] . In 1990, she starred in the political thriller Ken Loach " Beyond the Veil of Secrecy ."
He is the author of several books for children, the novel Night Fun ( 1966 ), based on which she directed the film of the same name (nomination for the Golden Lion of the Venice IFF ). She wrote an autobiography of All Those Tomorrows ( 1985 ).
