The son of an officer. From the age of three he lived in Vienna, he learned to play the piano, in 1880-1882. He studied at the Vienna Conservatory , having graduated from Franz Krenna’s composition class. He worked as a choirmaster in 1886-1889. He taught music at the military school in Weiskirchen in Moravia, then returned to Vienna. In 1899–1900 headed the Vienna Academy of Singing . He worked as a proofreader in music printing, for the Universal Edition music publishing house he made many keyboard arrangements (in particular, six symphonic compositions by Gustav Mahler ); also published the book “Gustav Mahler. Song of the Earth : a thematic analysis ”( it. Gustav Mahler, Das Lied von der Erde: thematische Analyze ; 1912). He occupied the position of titular organist in several Vienna cathedrals. In 1913—1934 edited the church music magazine Musica divina .
Author of numerous religious works, including 16 masses and two requiems, as well as numerous songs. Wöss also owns three operas: Spring Deception ( German: Die Lenzlüge ; Elberfeld , 1905), Flavienna's Adventures ( German: Flaviennes Abenteuer ; Breslau , 1910, after V. Stifer ) and Camilhan ( Camilhan ; not delivered) . In the music of Woess, especially in the church, the influence of Anton Bruckner is felt, which he left a memoir essay about.
