Cyber Attack on Dyn

The Dyn cyber attack took place on October 21, 2016 and consisted of many DoS attacks targeting the systems operated by the Dyn DNS provider, which made it impossible to access many major Internet platforms and services in Europe and North America. [1] [2] The Anonymous groups and New World Hackers claimed responsibility with the attack.

As a DNS provider, Dyn provides the end user with the service of translating a domain name , for example, entered into the address bar of a web browser , into the corresponding IP address . The DoS attack included tens of millions of requests to the system [3] from a large number of IP addresses. It is believed that this was done through a botnet coordinated through a large number of devices connected to the Internet , such as printers , cameras that were infected with Mirai. With an estimated load of 1.2 terabits per second, according to expert opinions, the attack became the largest recorded. [four]

Time and Impact

According to Dyn, the DDoS attack began at 7:00 ( EDT ) and was repelled at 9:20. The second attack was recorded at 11:52, Internet users began to complain about the difficulty of accessing network sites. [5] The third attack began after lunch, after 4:00 p.m. [3] [6] At 18:11 Dyn reported that the problem had been resolved. [7] [8]
