Biography
Son of Edmund Winchester and Charlotte Augusta (Shepherd) Converse. [1] Graduated from Harvard College , after which he studied composition with John Payne and George Chadwick in Boston and with Carl Berman and Joseph Reinberger at the Royal Academy of Music in Munich . In 1894 he married Emma Tudor. They had seven children. [1] In 1899, he began teaching at the New England Conservatory , from 1901-1907 at Harvard University and from 1921-1938 again at the New England Conservatory (since 1931 - dean). Among the students: Alan Hovaness , and others. The author of the first American opera ( Lolan, or The Wish Tube ), staged in Boston in 1906, and on the Metropolitan Opera in 1910. Also wrote music for films.
