It was founded on August 29, 1926 with the association of the Firenze club and the football section of the Libertas youth team.

Club History

Fiorentina before WWII

Fiorentina was founded in 1926 by a member of the National Fascist Party Marquis Luigi Ridolfi [3] , who initiated the merger of two Florentine clubs - Firenze ( Italian. Club Sportivo Firenze ) and Libertas ( Italian. Palestra Ginnastica Libertas ). The purpose of this merger was the emergence in Florence of a strong club that could compete with rivals in northwest Italy . There was also a cultural revival of the Florentine Calcho , the ancestor of modern football , played by members of the Medici family [3] .

On September 22, 1929, for a friendly match with Roma , the Fiorentina football players first appeared on the field in purple t-shirts with the emblem in the form of a Florentine lily, until then the team played in red and white uniforms.

After a hard start and three seasons in the lower leagues, Fiorentina entered Serie A in 1931 . In the same year, a new stadium was opened in Florence, named “Giovanni Berta”, in honor of the famous fascist , but now it is known as “ Artemio Franchi ”. At that time, the stadium was a masterpiece of engineering and the opening ceremony was grand. To compete on equal terms with the best teams in Italy, Fiorentina was strengthened by new players, especially Uruguayan Pedro Petrone , nicknamed Bombardir ( Spanish El Artillero ). Despite the well-spent season and fourth place, the next year Fiorentina flew to Serie B , but quickly returned to Serie A. In 1941 they won their first Italian Cup , but the team was not able to achieve significant success in the 40s -for World War II and other problems.

First Scudetto, 50s and 60s

In the fifties, “Fiorentina” occupied a permanent place in the top five league teams. The team consisted of great players, such as Giuliano Sarti , Sergio Cervato , Francesco Rosetta , Guido Gratton , Giuseppe Chiappella and Aldo Scaramucci , but the best attacking duet was the Brazilian Julinho and the Argentine Miguel Montuori . This team won the first championship for Fiorentina in the 1955/56 season , 12 points ahead of Milan, who finished second. “Milan” beat Fiorentina the next year in the fight for the championship, but more significant was the fact that Fiorentina became the first Italian team to play in the European Cup finals, where they lost in real time with the score 0: 2 to Real Madrid "Where Alfredo Di Stefano shone. In the next three seasons, “Fiorentina” took second place in the championship. In the 1960/61 season, the club won the Italian Cup again and was successful on the international stage by winning the Cup Winners Cup in the match against the Rangers .

After several years during which the team became vice champion, Fiorentina sank down in the 60s, taking 4-6 places, but won the Italian Cup and the Mitropa Cup in 1966 .

Second Scudetto, 70s

Giancarlo Antognoni , former captain of Fiorentina

The 60s brought Fiorentina several trophies and good results in Serie A, but no one believed that the club could fight for the championship. Fiorentina started the 1968/69 season on a par with Milan, but losing to Bologna in the 7th round, lost to Cagliari , led by Luigi Riva , a place in the standings. After an unimpressive start, Fiorentina climbed to first place, but the first half of the season ended in a draw with Varese 2-2, which allowed Cagliari to take first place. The second half of the season was a struggle for the championship of three teams: “Milan”, “Cagliari” and “Fiorentina”. “Milan” dropped out of the fight, focusing on the European Cup, and it seemed that “Cagliari” will retain its leadership, but after the defeat of “ Juventus ” Fiorentina took the first line. Fiorentina won all the remaining matches of the championship, including the super-principle match with Juventus, eventually winning the league title. In the European Cup next year, Fiorentina achieved good results, including a victory in the USSR over Dynamo Kyiv , but was knocked out in the Celtic quarter-finals, losing by a score of 0: 3.

Violet players began the decade of the 70s with a scudetto embroidered on their chests, but this period was not too productive for the team. After 5th place in 1971 , the team ended the season in the middle of the table each year, on the verge of relegation in 1972 and 1978 . Fiorentina won the Anglo-Italian League Cup in 1974 and the Italian Cup in 1975 . The team consisted of young talents, such as Vincenzo Guerini and Moreno Rogi , who suffered from injuries, but most importantly was Giancarlo Antonioni , who later became an idol for fans of Fiorentina. He is the leader in the number of matches held for Fiorentina. The young constellation of players who joined the team was called " Fiorentina Ye-Ye ."

Era of Pontello

In 1980, Fiorentina was bought by Flavio Pontello, a native of a wealthy family who owns a construction business owner. He quickly changed the team’s anthem and coat of arms , which led to discontent among the fans, but at the same time he brought in high-class players such as Francesco Graziani and Eraldo Pecci from Torino , Daniel Bertoni from Seville , Daniele Massaro from " Monza " and the young Pietro Verkhovoda from " Sampdoria ". The team’s game was built around Giancarlo Antonioni. In the 1981/82 season , Fiorentina fought an interesting fight against its most important rival, Juventus. The fate of the championship was decided on the last day of the season, just when Giancarlo Antonioni received a serious injury. Fiorentina needed to score in a match with Cagliari, but she could not win. Juventus won the champion title, scoring a controversial penalty, and the rivalry between the two teams flared up with renewed vigor.

The following years, the Fiorentina darted between high places and battles for survival. Also, several interesting football players came to the team, Ramon Angel Diaz , nicknamed “Bald” ( Spanish El Pelado ) and, more notably, the young Roberto Baggio .

In 1990, Fiorentina struggled for the right to stay in Serie A until the very last day of the season, but reached the UEFA Cup final , where Juventus again became its rival. The team from Turin won the trophy, but the Fiorentina typhos said the reason for the defeat was that the return match was held in Avellino (it was forbidden to play at home Fiorentina), a city where many Juventus fans were sold, as well as the fact that Roberto Baggio was sold rivals on match day. Pontello, experiencing great financial difficulties, sold all the players, and was forced to leave after serious outrage in the streets of Florence. The club was bought by the famous producer Mario Cecci Gori .

Era of Checky Gory

Gabriel Batistuta , one of the best Fiorentina players in the 90s

After the first season under the control of Cecci Gori, the new owner began to buy good players: Brian Laudrup , Stefan Effenberg , Francesco Bayano and, most importantly, Gabriel Batistuto , who became the team icon in the 90s. However, in 1993, Mario Cecci Gori died, and his son, Vittorio Cecci Gori , stood at the helm of the club. Despite a good start to the season, Chekki Gori fired head coach Luigi Radice after losing to Atalanta [4] and replaced him with Aldo Agroppi . The results were terrible: Fiorentina dropped to the bottom of the standings and dropped out to Serie B at the end of the season.

Claudio Ranieri took over as a coach in the 1993/94 season , and Fiorentina was the leader in Serie B this season. After returning to Serie A, Ranieri created a good team whose game was built around Gabriel Batistuta, who became the best in the 1994/95 season scorer of the championship . The young talent Rui Costa and the new-born world champion, defender Marcio Santos, were bought. The first became the captain of Fiorentina and the idol of the fans, the second disappointed and was sold after a season. Fiorentina finished the season in 10th place.

The following season, Chekki Gori bought several important players, such as Stefan Schwartz . The club again showed its character by winning the Italian Cup in a match with Atalanta, and also took third place in Serie A. In summer, Fiorentina became the first non-champion to win the Italian Super Cup, defeating Milan at San Siro with 2: 1.

The season 1996/97 was disappointing for Fiorentina in the championship, but she reached the semifinals of the Cup Winners Cup, defeating Gloria (away 1: 1, home 1: 0), Sparta (home 2: 1, away 1: 1) and Benficu (away 2: 0, at home 0: 1). In the semifinals, Fiorentina lost to Barcelona , who won the tournament. The main acquisitions this season were Luis Oliveira and Andrei Kanchelskis .

At the end of the season, Ranieri left Fiorentina for Valencia , and Cecci Gori invited Alberto Malezani . Fiorentina played well, but fought hard with weaker teams. However, she was able to achieve qualifications in the UEFA Cup. Malezani left the Fiorentina after only a season, and was replaced by Giovanni Trapattoni . Under the leadership of Trapattoni and with the goals of Batistuta, Fiorentina fought for the championship in the 1998/99 season , but finished in third place, qualifying for the Champions League. In the same season, to make ends meet, the club sold cans of air from its stadium, selling only three types of aroma - “Spirit of the stands”, “Essence of victory” and “Atmosphere of the locker room”, and the last fragrance was sold most successfully. The following year, Fiorentina did not play very well in Serie A, but held historic matches in the Champions League, defeating Arsenal 1-0 at Wembley and Manchester United 2-0 at home, in Florence. But Fiorentina was knocked out of the tournament in the second group stage.

At the end of the season, Trapattoni was replaced by Turkish coach Fatih Terim . But Batistuta’s transition to Roma , which became the champion next year, became more noticeable. Fiorentina played well in the 2000/01 season and remained in the first half of the standings despite breaking the contract with Terim, after which Roberto Mancini came to the club. Fiorentina also won the Italian Cup for the sixth and so far last time.

The year 2001 signaled a change for the better in Fiorentina, but the club was in a terrible financial condition: it could not pay salaries and had debts of about $ 50 million. The owner of the club, Vittorio Cecchi Gori, could invest some money in the club, but even this would not be enough to keep the club afloat. Fiorentina was demoted in the league at the end of the 2001/02 season and came under the control of a judicially controlled administration in June 2002 . This form of bankruptcy (sports facilities could not close in this way, but could suffer from a similar procedure) indicated that the club could not participate in Series B in the 2002/03 season , and as a result, ceased to exist.

Adrian Mutu , Fiorentina Star

Era Della Valle

The club was immediately reorganized in August 2002 under the name "Florence Viola" ( lat. Florentia Viola ), owned by Andrea Della Valle . The club was allowed to compete in Series C2 , the fourth Italian division. The only player remaining in the club was Angelo Di Livio , whose loyalty made him a fan favorite. With the help of Di Livio and striker Christian Rigano , the club became the first in their group of the C2 Series, which meant promotion to the C1 Series . But, thanks to the Catania Case, the club was immediately promoted to Serie B, bypassing Serie C1, which was due to the permission of the Italian Football Federation of the situation with Catania , by increasing the number of clubs in Serie B from 20 to 24 and promoting Fiorentina "Due to" sports merit " [5] . In the summer of 2003, the club regained the right to use the name "Fiorentina" and the famous purple design, and also changed the old name of Associazone Calcio Fiorentina to Associazone Calcio Firenze Fiorentina.

Cesare Prandelli , Fiorentina coach

The unusual double promotion of the club caused a lot of controversy, some believed that Fiorentina did not deserve it. But, nevertheless, the club remained in Serie B and finished the 2003/04 season in sixth place, having fallen into a two-match confrontation with Perugia (the team that finished the season in 15th place in Serie A). In it, “Fiorentina” won with a total score of 2: 1 and reached Serie A. Both goals were scored by Enrico Fantini . Upon returning to Serie A, Fiorentina fought for survival until the last day of the 2004/05 season , avoiding relegation only in the confrontation with Bologna and Parma . In 2005, Della Valle invited Pantaleo Corvino as the new sports director. That same summer, young Italians Riccardo Montolivo and Giampaolo Pazzini from Atalanta and Alessandro Gamberini from Bologna joined the team, who later became key players in the violets.

Luca Tony in Fiorentina

In the 2005/06 season, Fiorentina hired a new head coach, Cesare Prandelli, and made several acquisitions through the summer transfer window , of which Palermo striker Luca Toni and French goalkeeper Sebastian Frey became the most significant. The combination of captain Dario Dainelli and Czech Tomasz Uyfalushi on the defensive, Christian Brocky , Stefano Fiore and Danes Martin Jorgensen in midfield, Luke Toni in the attack and Sebastian Freya in the goal became an outstanding power in Serie A, thanks to which the team took 74 points qualifying for the third qualifying round of the Champions League. “Fiorentina”, thus, entrenched in the status of the elite of Italian football. Tony scored 31 goals in just 34 games, becoming the first player to exceed the 30-goal record set in the 1958/59 season by Antonio Valentin Angellino , for which the striker was awarded the Golden Boot .

On July 14, 2006, Fiorentina was going to be transferred back to Serie B due to her involvement in Calcopoli and imposed a penalty of 12 points. But the team was allowed to stay in Serie A, but with a penalty of 19 points. Fiorentina was also removed from the Champions League [6] . After the start of the season, the penalty was reduced from 19 points to 15. Despite the start with −15 points, Fiorentina made it to the UEFA Cup. The famous Romanian striker Adrian Mutu came to the club, and their bunch with Tony became one of the best in the championship: for two they scored 31 goals.

Alberto Gilardino , Fiorentina World Champion

While many doubted the potential of the “violet” in the 2007/08 season due to the departure of Tony in Bayern , Fiorentina took a sensational start, but in the middle of the season she sank to a lower position. The series of defeats that led to the loss of points was related to the family tragedy of the Fiorentina coach Prandelli, whose wife died of cancer. Fiorentina reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup, where they were defeated in the Rangers penalty shoot-out after two goalless draws. The season ended on a major note after defeating Torino 1-0, which allowed Fiorentina to maintain fourth place in the fight against Milan and qualify for the Champions League.

In the summer of 2008, Fiorentina made several important acquisitions: the 2006 world champion Alberto Gilardino , the young vice-captain of the Montenegrin team Stevan Jovetich , the Peruvian Juan Manuel Vargas , the defender Gianluca Comotto and the Brazilian opornik Felipe Melo were bought . But at the same time, Tomasz Uyfalushi left the team, having spent the last season as vice-captain of the team. In the Champions League, Fiorentina passed the qualifying round without any problems, beating Slavia at home 2-0 and tied away 0-0. However, she could not leave the group, losing to Bayern and Lyon , but, taking third place, got into the UEFA Cup, where she was immediately knocked out of the tournament by the Dutch Ajax , losing 0: 1 at home, and playing 1: 1 at a party. But in the championship “Fiorentina” again performed successfully, again taking fourth place.

In the offseason, Felipe Melo moved to Juventus, but from Juventus, Marco Marchionni and Cristiano Zanetti , a pupil of Fiorentina, joined the team, who became base players. The captain of the Italian youth team Lorenzo De Silvestri moved from Lazio to Fiorentina. The violet season began again with the Champions League qualifying stage, where Portugal 's vice champion Sporting was held. (2: 2 away and 1: 1 at home). In the Fiorentine group, Olympic Lyon, as well as Liverpool and the Hungarian champion Debrecen , again came across. Andrea Della Valle left the presidency on September 24 , and the duties of the president passed to Mario Cognigni until a new president was elected [7] . On October 26, Della Valle returned to the club, but already as chairman. Fiorentina left the group in the Champions League from first place, gaining 15 points (only Bordeaux scored more in the group stage). In the 1/8 finals, Fiorentina was knocked out by Bayern due to a mistake by the referee team led by Tom Henning Evrebou , who scored offside goal by Miroslav Klose , as a result of which Fiorentina lost 2-1 away, and even and won at home 3: 2, could not reach the quarter finals. On March 30, 2010, Diego Della Valle left the post of Honorary President, which he announced in his letter to the fans [8] .

Club Anthem

Oh Fiorentina (...)

Forza Fiorentina!
Alé Alé Viola!

Transfer:
A purple banner fluttering in the wind
On the battlefields and courage.
Hope lives supporting us.
We have eleven athletes and one heart!

Chorus:
Oh, Fiorentina, we want to see you as a queen among other teams.
Oh, Fiorentina, you fight boldly everywhere.
In an hour of despair or victory
Remember that in the history of football you have your place!

Violet is fighting courageously
To bring glory to Florence.
On your banner, write: "Strength and Heart."
And victory will always be ours!

Chorus.

Go ahead, Fiorentina!
Come on, come on, Violet!
