The Novonikolaevsky fire of 1909 is a major fire that occurred on May 11, 1909 in Novonikolaevsk (present-day Novosibirsk ). The cause of the disaster was the careless handling of fire. The fire lasted several days and caused great damage to the economy and population of the city. A huge number of residential buildings were destroyed. A few days after the fire in the city began an epidemic of typhoid .

Event
On May 11, 1909, a furnace was fired in the courtyard of a house located on Kainskaya Street . A resident of this estate Gnusin heated resin on its territory for his own economic purposes. During a careless furnace, sparks got into one of the outbuildings, which caused it to ignite. In the following minutes, the fire spread over to the nearby hayloft and the warehouse of agricultural implements. From the street Cain, the flame spread by the wind passed to Alexandrovskaya , Mostovaya and Spasskaya streets, an hour later the blocks of Vorontsovskaya , Krivoshchekovskaya and Logovskaya streets were on fire.
The whole city was shrouded in smoke, a glow of fire was visible everywhere. The team of the voluntary fire society was not able to withstand the fire element. After a while, a lit up scallion tower collapsed, under its burning debris were stairs, hooks and a cart with barrels. It was possible to save only a fire bell and a telephone exchange. The city and Zakamensky teams of firefighters arrived to help, but also could not rectify the situation.
The fire crossed the access roads to the Kamenka River. In panic, the inhabitants pulled out old people and children from burning houses, the hot air was filled with pungent smoke. The fire was approaching Bazaar Square.
Fire covered a substantial part of the city - from the place of the modern bus station to the territory where Central Park is now located, from Mykolayiv Avenue and to the Kamenka floodplain.
Consequences
Damage to the city amounted to more than 5 million rubles in gold. The fire destroyed 22 quarters, 794 houses and all the household buildings near them burned down. A huge number of people lost their homes and were forced to look for places for temporary residence and food. Thousands of homeless people filled the soot-covered city, the air of which for a long time still had an unpleasant bitter smell. A few days after the fire, a typhoid epidemic broke out among the population.

Charity help
In order to help the injured people, the editorial office of the newspaper Narodnaya Chronicles organized the reception of donations. Members of the Council Zakharov and Kuznetsov provided free premises for the fire brigade and telephone exchange. Miroshnikov, the owner of the burnt Lebel retail laundry, suggested taking linen that had survived the fire in Frolov’s house, located on Obskaya Street. To assist in eliminating the consequences of the fire, the governor of Tomsk, N. L. Gondatti, arrived in Novonikolaevsk. The theater of B.D. Chindorin staged three performances, the proceeds from them were given in favor of the victims of the fire. During the tour, the famous city was visited by the famous actress V.F. Komissarzhevskaya , she transferred all the money received from the performance “in favor of the long-suffering city of Novonikolaevsk ...”
Government assistance and insurance benefits
The amount of money provided to citizens by insurance companies amounted to 2 million rubles. The support provided by the state was to supply the affected residents with forest for 100 thousand rubles. In addition, the city received a loan of 150 thousand rubles from the treasury to restore it.

Interesting Facts
In 1910, a resident of Novonikolaevsk Gnusin, who was responsible for the tragedy, complained to his neighbor, accusing him that the bathhouse he had built could lead to a fire, after which it was forbidden to use this building. But during the subsequent inspection it turned out that the bathhouse was built without violating fire safety standards.
