Auke was the son of Andris Peters Stellingwerf, a rigging manufacturer in Harlingen . When his older brother, Captain Frederick Stellingwerf , was captured during the First Anglo-Dutch War at the battle of Scheveningen , Auke was promoted to his deputy in 1654. In 1656, he was captain des Prinsen Wapen during the liberation of Danzig . In 1658, he took part in the battle of Öresund as captain of Prinses Albertina . On August 31, 1662, he married Antje Steenstra, already an acting captain.

From that moment on, his career went quickly. In 1665 there was a kind of career race among the top officers of various admiralties, and Aukes on March 17 of that year received the rank of lieutenant admiral of Friesland, the first in his province. But he did not use his high position for long. In the Lowoftoft battle, Aukes commanded the Fourth (Frieslandian) squadron on the flagship Zevenwolden and was killed before he was thirty years old. Thierck Hiddes de Vries , who died just a year later in the same Second Anglo-Dutch War, became his successor. Therefore, they are often referred to together as two Frisian naval heroes.

His grave is in the Grotto Kirk in Harlingen .
