Hagrifus

Hagrifus ( lat. Hagryphus ) - a genus of dinosaur dinosaurs from the Caenagnathidae family. Fossils were found in the Upper Cretaceous sediments (83.5–70.6 Ma ago [1] ) of Utah , USA . The name means “a giant four-legged, similar to the bird-god of the western desert” and consists of two words - “ Ha ”, the name of the Egyptian god of the desert, and “ Griffin ”, the name of a mythological creature that looks like a bird. The only species of Hagryphus giganteus was described in 2005 [2] .

Opening

Hagryphus was first discovered in the USA. The remains of a bird-like dinosaur, American scientists found in the territory of the national nature monument Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, in the northern part of Utah. The discovery was made by paleontologists from the University of Utah and the Natural History Museum.

Features

Scientists were able to restore the appearance of a dinosaur, and bones from Asia helped them in this. Hagryphus belongs to the group of bird-like dinosaurs - oviraptorosaurs , with toothless beaks and strong paws with huge claws. Judging by the discovered remains, Hagryphus was much larger than the dinosaurs found in Canada and the northern United States. As reflected in the species name ( H. giganteus ), hagrifus was a large oviraptorosaurus, reaching an estimated length of 3 m, making it the largest representative of its group after the gigantoraptor . H. giganteus is 30-40% larger than the next largest North American oviraptorosaurus - Chirostenotes . The length of the holotype arm is about 30 cm [3] . However, in further studies, the size of the animal was reduced to 2.4 m in length and 50 kg of weight [4] .
