Biography
William John Codrington was born November 26, 1804 in the family of a British admiral .
During the Crimean War, he commanded the 1st brigade of the light infantry division, participated in battles on Alma and At Inkerman , in June 1855 led an unsuccessful attack on the Redan near Sevastopol.
After General James Simpson was recalled, Codrington was appointed commander in chief of the English troops in Crimea, and elevated to lieutenant general. This appointment provoked vigorous protests in England , but the subsequent cessation of hostilities left the question of Codrington's combat talents open.
After returning to England, he was elected to parliament in 1857 , but resigned in 1859 to take over as governor of Gibraltar until 1865 .
William John Codrington died on August 6, 1884 in the city of London .
