Body length 16 cm [2] . The head is round. Feather "ears" are absent. The color of the upper body is from light brown-brown to gray-brown. On the lower part of the body, longitudinal stripes are clearly visible. The “false face” on the back of the head is especially pronounced in this species.
The species is common in the south of the Mexican state of Southern Baja California . Sedentary bird. It lives in pine and oak-pine forests at an altitude of 1,500–2,100 m. It is active both during the day and at dusk. The diet includes insects, small mammals, reptiles and small birds. Nothing is known about the biology of reproduction.
