Barton Warren Evermann is an American ichthyologist . Born October 24, 1853 in Iowa , and raised in Indiana . In college, he became friends with David Starr Jordan , with whom he subsequently published many scientific articles. After graduation, he worked for ten years as a teacher in public schools in Indiana and California .

On October 24, 1875, Evermann married Meade Hawkings. From this marriage a daughter and a son were born. From 1886 to 1914, Evermann worked in various positions at the American Fisheries Agency. In 1914, he became director of the California Academy of Sciences . He held this post until his death on September 27, 1932. Evermann was buried in a cemetery in the city of Burlington (Indiana).
In honor of Evermann, the Evermannellidae family of deep-sea fish, the genera of Evermannella fish , Evermannia and Evermannichthys , the cactus Mammillaria evermanniana and the volcano on the Mexican island of Socorro were named.
