The 1958 French presidential election was held on December 21 . In the elections, the first president of the Fifth Republic was elected, which was General Charles de Gaulle . These were the last indirect presidential elections in France . The president was elected by an electoral college, which included members of the French parliament , members of the General Councils, members of overseas assemblies, mayors and members of city councils. In total 81 764 electors were registered, 81 290 participated.
