(12896) Geoffroy ( Latin Geoffroy ) is a small asteroid on the outer part of the main belt , which was discovered on August 26, 1998 by the Belgian astronomer Eric Elst at the La Silla Observatory and is named after French naturalist and zoologist Etienne Geoffroy .
