Mikhail Petrovich Kosach ( pseudonym Mikhail Obachny and others; July 13 ( 25 ), 1869 , Novograd-Volynsky - October 3 ( 16 ), 1903 , Kharkov ) - Ukrainian meteorologist and writer , author of several stories published in periodicals [1] . The son of Olena Pchilka , the brother of Lesya Ukrainka and Olga Kosach-Krivinyuk .

Biography
Born on July 13 ( July 25 ), 1869 in the city of Novograd-Volynsky . Received primary education from maternal hands and lips. He began his official education in the fifth grade of the Helm Classical Gymnasium, from which he graduated with a silver medal. From 1888 , he was a student in the mathematical department of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics at Kiev University , and since 1891 he studied at the University of Dorpat . At the same time she is fond of literature , as well as photography and ethnography . He prints short stories in the Galician magazines under the pseudonym Mikhail Obachny ( Rus. Prudent ). He defends his thesis in physics and teaches it and mathematics at the Tartu Gymnasium . He had a number of technical inventions , took part in the work of the Ukrainian community in Tartu .
Since 1901 , assistant professor of physics and meteorology at Kharkov University . Here, his talent as an organizer flourished. In fact, he became the founder of the meteorological service in the Kharkov region . In addition, he taught general physics at the veterinary institute and at the school of the technical society. He is the author of several works in mathematics and physics, in particular: “Some attention to Demchinsky’s weather prediction” and “The position of the center line in electric cyclones”.
Died October 16, 1903 from dysentery in the 35th year of life. He was buried in Kiev at the Baykovsky cemetery next to his family .
Literary activity
He began his literary activity with translations of short stories:
- N. Gogol (“Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka”, 1885 , together with Lesia Ukrainka ),
- V. Korolenko ("On Easter Night"),
- G. Senkevich ,
- Francis Bret Hart .
He was a member of the literary circle of the Pleiades. In the magazines Zarya and Life and the Word, he published a number of stories:
- “Christmas under the Southern Cross” ( 1889 );
- “On the hotbed of progress” ( 1891 );
- “Lord of the world”, “Death of the world”, “Dreams”, “Butterflies”, “Ghouls”, “Guest”, “What?”, “Nowhere” (all 1894 - 1897 ) and others.
