Biography
Activities before enrollment in the cosmonaut corps.
Born in an employee's family. In 1952 he graduated from high school number 2 of the city of Vyazniki with a silver medal. In [1958, he graduated from the Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI), aircraft-building faculty.
From July 1958 - engineer, from December 1960 - senior engineer, from October 1962 - head of the 9th Division of the OKB-1. In this department he was engaged in designing the Martian manned spacecraft (TMK) under the leadership of M. K. Tikhonravov . From September 1964 - Head of the 17th Division Group (Ballistics Department).
- In May-June 1964, he was sent for a medical examination at the Central Military Research Aviation Hospital (TSVNIAG) as one of 14 candidates from OKB-1 for flight at the first three-seater spacecraft " Voskhod " as an astronaut-engineer. In June 1964 he received the admission of the medical commission to special training. His candidacy was considered at the meeting of the Credentials Committee on June 11, 1964, but he was not recommended for admission to the group.
- In July 1965 he passed a medical examination at IBMP as a member of the first set of astronauts in the OKB-1 (now RSC Energia ) and was one of 12 engineers who passed all the stages of selection.
- In the spring of 1966, he was again examined at IBMP, on May 23, 1966 he passed the credentials committee at TsKBEM and by order No. 43 was included in the first group of candidates for test cosmonauts at TsKBEM for the post of tester of the 731st department, head of the group of candidates for test cosmonauts of TsKBEM .
Service in the cosmonaut corps
- In September 1966 - December 1968 he underwent training for the flight of the Soyuz spacecraft in the 2nd crew of a passive ship under the Docking program, together with Andriyan Nikolayev (from August 1968 replaced by Anatoly Filipchenko ) and Viktor Gorbatko .
- In 1966–1968, he studied in the postgraduate course at TsKBEM, since 1968 he has been a candidate of technical sciences, since May 1968 - test cosmonaut of the 731st department. Since March 1968 a member of the CPSU. Since June 1969 - Senior Researcher.
- On January 5, 1969, during the launch of the spacecraft, the Soyuz-5 was a backup for the flight engineer Alexey Yeliseyev .
- From February 1969, he prepared as a flight engineer of the first crew of spacecraft Soyuz-6 under the flight program of three manned spacecraft.
1st space flight From October 11 to 16, 1969 as a flight engineer of Soyuz-6 spacecraft together with G. S. Shonin according to the program of the first in the world group flight of three spacecraft ( Soyuz-6 , Soyuz-7 , " Soyuz-8 ").
During the flight, for the first time in the world, experiments on welding in space were carried out using equipment developed at the E. O. Paton Electric Welding Institute . Call sign: "Antey-2". Flight duration: 4 days 22 hours 42 minutes 47 seconds.

- September 18, 1970 - March 20, 1971 - was trained for the flight to the Salyut-1 DOS as a flight engineer of the second crew under the program of the 1st expedition together with Alexey Leonov and Peter Kolodin .
- April 23, 1971 was a backup for the flight engineer of the Soyuz-10 spacecraft Alexei Eliseev .
- April 27 - May 27, 1971 - was trained as a flight engineer of the main crew of the Soyuz-11 spacecraft for the flight under the program of the 1st expedition to the Salyut-1 DOS together with Alexey Leonov and Peter Kolodin.
- On June 4, 1971, by the decision of the State Commission, the main crew was suspended from the flight due to the blackout in the lungs found in V. N. Kubasov (later it turned out that this is a mild form of allergy to the flowering of one of the plants on the ground).
The backup crew flew ( Georgi Dobrovolsky , Vladislav Volkov , Viktor Patsayev ), who died on June 30 upon returning to Earth.
- October 10, 1971 - May 24, 1972 - prepared as a flight engineer of the first crew of the 1st expedition to the Salyut-2 DOS together with Alexei Leonov. The flight was canceled due to the accident of the Proton launch vehicle on July 29, 1972 during the launch of DOS into orbit.
- In August — September 1972, I was preparing as a flight engineer of the first crew for a flight under an autonomous flight program in order to test the new Sokol-K spacesuits. The flight was canceled and made an unmanned flight.
- October 25, 1972 - April 10, 1973 - was trained as a flight engineer of the first crew of the 1st expedition to the Salyut-3 DOS together with Alexei Leonov. The flight was canceled due to a station crash in orbit in May 1973.

2nd Space Flight From July 15 to July 21, 1975 as a flight engineer of Soyuz-19 spacecraft together with Alexei Leonov under the program of the first international space flight.
During the flight, the first in the history of the docking of two spacecraft of different countries - the USSR and the USA (in the docked state, two ships together spent 46 hours) was performed and work was carried out in orbit together with the crew of the Apollo spacecraft (EPAS) | Apollo - Thomas Stafford , Vance Brand and Donald Slayton . Call sign: "Soyuz-2". Flight duration: 5 days 22 hours 30 minutes 51 seconds.
- From May 5, 1977 - Instructor-cosmonaut-tester of the 2nd class of the 110th department, head of the head design bureau of the Scientific-Production Association “Energia”.
- August 22, 1977 - June 9, 1978 - training as a commander of the second Soviet-Polish crew under the program of an expedition to visit the Salyut-6 OS together with Zenon Yankovsky
- June 27, 1978 was understudy of the commander of spacecraft " Soyuz-30 " Peter Klimuk .
- November 20, 1978 - May 18, 1979 - training as a commander of the first Soviet-Hungarian crew under the program of an expedition to visit the Salyut-6 OS together with Bertalan Farkas . The flight was delayed due to the accident of the corrective-braking propulsion system (KDDU) at the Soyuz-33 spacecraft. In this regard, from September 3, 1979 to May 12, 1980, he continued his training in the regime of maintaining fitness in the same crew under the same program.
3rd space flight From May 26 to June 3, 1980 as commander of spacecraft " Soyuz-36 " together with Bertalan Farkas in the Soviet-Hungarian program of visiting the OS "Salyut-6". In orbit, he worked together with the crew of the main expedition on the OS - Leonid Popov and Valery Ryumin . Call sign: Orion-1. Flight duration: 7 days 20 hours 45 minutes 44 seconds.
