Background and Composition
Floral Shoppe was created by American producer and graphic designer , also known by the pseudonym Vektroid; To release this album, she was chosen by the pseudonym Macintosh Plus, in honor of a computer with the same name . [2] The album is often referred to as an example of the popularization of the then-emerging internet music genre vaporwave, [3] along with works by other musicians released by the Beer on the Rug record label. [4] Prior to Floral Shoppe , she previously released other chillwave and vaporwave releases under several pseudonyms such as Vektroid, Laserdisc Visions, dstnt, and New Dreams Ltd. [4] Adam Harper of Dummy , in an article on vaporwave culture, described the songs in the album as “the adult contemporary 's jerky, glucan, and spoiled soul, along with flickering advertising melodies from the spa” ( English chopped, glitching and screwed adult contemporary soul alongside twinkling spa promotional tunes ). [four]
Release and packaging
Floral Shoppe was digitally released on Bandcamp's online music store on December 9, 2011 by independent label Beer on the Rug. [5] All track names are written in Japanese , with the exception of two bonus tracks without a title. [6] The album gained great popularity on the Internet, eventually becoming "the most popular vaporwave album on the Internet." [7] Beer on the Rug later announced the re-release of the album in cassette format C44. [8] Edition for cassettes, with a circulation of 100 copies, includes two bonus tracks that are not in the digital version, and a code for downloading the album. [8] Vektroid later launched a series of T-shirts and hoodies with an illustrated album cover. [9]
Reception
The album was warmly received by both critics and ordinary listeners. Tiny Mix Tapes Jonathan Dean wrote positively about Floral Shoppe , calling the album “one of the best albums in the vaporwave genre, a series of distant but soulful manipulations of sound that carefully creates its own meditative mood.” [10] Stephen Purcell of Noise rated him as one of the best albums and wrote: "this is a roof-covering album, it is nice and important when it is done as well as this one, it needs recognition." [eleven]
Giving the album a rating of 5.0, Adam Downer from Sputnikmusic described the album as "constantly - and amazingly - disturbing" and "a beautiful record that is both enveloping and strange, nostalgic and futuristic, bizarre and completely simple." [12]
