Biography
Born March 13, 1908 in Nizhyn , now Chernihiv region . Jew .
In 1928, he was sent to the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute named after M. I. Kalinin in the direction of the Grozny builders' union. Subsequently, he was transferred to the Leningrad Institute of Railway Engineers , which he graduated in 1932.
In 1932, he was called up to the Red Army for special forces. In 1935 he graduated from the Military Railway School. He commanded a railway battalion in the Far East , laid a railway to the port of Nakhodka .
He entered in 1937, and in 1940 graduated with honors from the MV Frunze Military Academy .
In March 1940 he was appointed head of the operational division of the 16th Ulyanovsk Rifle Division named after V.I. Kikvidze of the 65th Special Rifle Corps in the Baltic .
On May 20, 1941, Major Shafarenko was appointed chief of staff of the 6th airborne brigade of the 3rd airborne corps of the Odessa Military District , which was stationed in the city of Pervomaisk .
Member of the Great Patriotic War since July 1941. Participated in defensive battles south of Kiev , in the area of the Goloseevsky forest and the village of Myshelovka . For the defense of Kiev he was awarded the Order of the Red Banner .
After the battle for Kiev was appointed commander of the 6th airborne brigade. In November-December 1941, Shafarenko’s paratroopers held defenses near Kursk , near the city of Tim.
In December 1941, the 3rd Airborne Corps was transformed into the 87th Rifle Division , in which P. M. Shafarenko became commander of the 96th Rifle Regiment. In January 1942, for heroism in battles, the division was transformed into the 13th Guards Rifle Division , and the 96th Rifle Regiment into the 39th Guards Rifle Regiment.
In February 1942, Colonel Shafarenko was appointed commander of the 190th Rifle Division, which began to form in Stalingrad .
After a short time he was appointed commander of the 25th Guards Rifle Division , which was formed in the Kalinin Region on the basis of the 2nd Guards Rifle Brigade. In June 1942, the division was included in the Voronezh Front and transferred to the Storozhevsky bridgehead (south of Voronezh ), where it fought. Subsequently, she took part in the liberation of Kharkov and the city of Valka . For the Kharkov operation he was awarded the Order of Suvorov, 2nd degree .
Since November 1943, Major General (1942) Shafarenko - commander of the 119th Guards Rifle Division . As part of the 3rd shock army, he took part in the liberation of Belarus .
Since June 1944 - commander of the 33rd Infantry Division on the 2nd Baltic Front .
Since August 1944 - commander of the 23rd Guards Rifle Division on the 3rd Baltic Front . The division took part in the offensive on the fortified line “Valga” in Latvia . Later, Poland joined the fighting of the 1st Belorussian Front , fought the Oder , and participated in the assault on Berlin .
At the end of the war, he commanded a division in the Belarusian Military District , was the chief of staff of the rifle corps.
In 1950 he graduated from the Higher Academic Courses at the K.E. Voroshilov Higher Military Academy .
In 1951-1957 - deputy commander of the army. From April 1956 to December 1961, he was head of the combat training department of the 28th Army of the Belarusian Military District .
April 27, 1962 awarded the military rank of "Lieutenant General" [3] .
In 1962-1967 - Deputy Commander of the Siberian Military District .
In 1967 he retired. He lived in Odessa. He died in 1988 [4] . He was buried at the Tairovsky cemetery .

He was awarded the Order of Lenin (05/29/1945), three Orders of the Red Banner (12/27/1941, 07/29/1944,?), Orders of Suvorov , 2nd degree (08/02/1943), Kutuzov , 2nd degree (04/06/1945), World War II 1st degree (04/06/1985), Red Star , with many medals .
At the beginning of 1944 he was awarded the Czech “Military Cross of 1939” for participating in joint operations with the 1st separate Czech battalion of Lieutenant Colonel L. Liberty .
