Nintendo Switch can work as a home game console - in this case, the main device of the console is inserted into a special docking station connected to the TV, and the TV screen is used as an output means. Outside the dock, the Nintendo Switch uses its own LCD touch screen - the player can hold the console in his hands and interact with it like a tablet computer or place it on the table in front of several players participating in the game, like a miniature TV. The Joy-Con wireless controllers included with the console can also be used in different ways: attach the handheld console to both sides of the console, insert them into the Grip accessory to get the shape of a traditional gamepad for the home console, or use them separately from the console like a Wii Remote . The console does not use blocking by region.

Nintendo has had financial losses since 2014, mainly due to poor sales of its previous Wii U console . Then Nintendo President Satoru Iwata pushed the company to mobile and new technologies.

The game console topped the ranking of the best technical innovations of 2017, compiled by the American magazine Time [11] .

History

Background

In 2009, Nintendo had record revenues, net sales and profits thanks to the release of Wii and Nintendo DS consoles in 2006 and 2004, respectively [12] [13] [14] . However, in subsequent years, Nintendo's revenue declined [15] [16] . With the release of Wii U in 2012, the company suffered losses for the first time since its focus on video games [17] . The New York Times attributed the decline in financial forecasts for 2014 to weak hardware sales compared to mobile games [18] . Previously, the company hesitated about entering this market, and then its president Satoru Iwata believed that they would “cease to be Nintendo” and lose their identity if they tried to enter it [19] . About three years before the announcement of Switch, Iwata, Tatsumi Kimishima, Genyё Takeda and Shigeru Miyamoto developed a strategy to upgrade the Nintendo business model, which included entering the mobile device market, creating new hardware and “maximizing [their] intellectual property” [20 ] . Before his death, Iwata managed to enter into a business alliance with the Japanese mobile operator DeNA to develop mobile games based on Nintendo franchises, believing that this approach would not jeopardize their integrity [21] [22] . After the death of Iwata in July 2015, Kimishima was appointed President of Nintendo, and Miyamoto was promoted to the title of Creative Partner ( Eng. Creative Fellow ) [20] .

Development

The original Switch concept was born shortly after the Wii U came out in 2012 [23] . Kimishima stated that when Nintendo assessed what new hardware they would like to create, they wanted “not just a successor” to Nintendo 3DS or Wii U, but thought “what new experience we can create” [20] . In an interview with Asahi Shimbun , Kimishima stated that Switch was designed to provide a “new way to play” that “would have a greater impact than Wii U” [24] [25] [26] . The president and chief operating officer of Nintendo of America, Reggie Fis-Amee, said that the console should be attractive as a device that allows gamers to play at home or on the road, and noted that it should allow developers to create new types of games [27] .

According to Xinyi Takahashi, one of the sources of inspiration for the Switch’s design was player feedback on Wii Remote. With the release of games like Wii Sports and Wii Fit , players were asking Nintendo if the company could make the Wii Remote in a smaller form factor, potentially linking it to body parts. This led Nintendo to think about what a smaller factor controller could provide, both in terms of hardware and the gaming processor. This led to the idea of a set-top box that would be small enough with these new controllers to be portable [28] . Other concepts also emerged from consumer reviews that were critical of Wii U. Fis-Emé said that players often criticized Wii U for the fact that although they liked using the Wii U GamePad controller, they would like to play games on it anywhere. However, if they were at a great distance from the main part of the console, this would become meaningless. This inspired Nintendo to develop a home console that the player could take with him anywhere. [29]

According to Xinyi Takahashi and Yoshiaki Koizumi, CEO of Nintendo Entertainment Planning & Development Division (EPD) and his deputy, one of the market areas that Nintendo wanted to satisfy was to create a device where players could play as “leisurely” games , and in the "deep", which would overcome the polarization of the gaming market at that time [23] . Takahashi believed that the Switch design took into account the cultural differences between gamers from the West and Japan, especially students. Japanese students used to spend more time together after school, and games were an important part of this social time. Western students, by contrast, had a more busy schedule limiting this. As a result, it was decided that the portable capabilities of the Switch could satisfy both lifestyles [30] . In some cases, Switch games were designed to encourage social interactions in groups; for example, a game required players to look at each other and not at the screen. Kimishima argued that, since Nintendo is involved in the entertainment industry, she considers Switch games that encourage communication as a means to their end goal [31] . Two key elements that were supposed to combine both markets were the ability of the device to work with a TV and in portable quality, as well as detachable controllers [23] . The name “Switch” was chosen not only to indicate the ability of the device to switch from manual mode to the home set-top box mode, but also to show “the idea of being a“ switch “that will change and change how people will have fun in everyday life” [32 ] .

Announcement and Start of Sales

The first news about the Nintendo Switch came on March 17, 2015, when Nintendo at a press conference announced a partnership with the Japanese mobile game provider DeNA. At this stage, the prefix was codenamed "NX", and called the "brand new concept" [33] . At a meeting with investors in April 2016, Nintendo announced that it plans to release NX worldwide in March 2017 [34] [35] . Despite the fact that Nintendo did not show NX at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2016 , she announced that the game The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild , which was originally planned as an exclusive for Wii U, will also be released on NX. At a meeting of shareholders after the conference, Miyamoto stated that the company had concerns that competitors might copy the NX idea if it was revealed too soon [36] [37] . The next month, rumors began to appear that the console uses the Nvidia Tegra chip and is a “hybrid” device, which implies that it can work both as a home game console connected to the TV as an output device, and as a portable gaming system , similar to tablet computers . There is also information that Nintendo will distribute games for consoles using both cartridges and digital downloads [38] [39] [40] .

On October 20, 2016, Nintendo officially announced the Nintendo Switch, and published a trailer that demonstrated the “hybrid” nature of the device [41] . At the time of the release of the trailer, Nintendo did not provide details about the capabilities of the platform, and events were planned for 2017 at which more detailed information about the console was to appear. The company said no additional features were shown in the evaluation trailer [42] [43] . In December 2016, Miyamoto and Fis-Emé at the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon with Jimmy Fallon showed Switch the prefix. In addition to showing off the hardware and functionality of the console, Fallon was given the opportunity to play Breath of the Wild live [44] .

At a press conference in Tokyo on January 13, 2017, Nintendo revealed details about the Switch, including specifications, launch dates, and worldwide prices. [45] The event was broadcast live in Japanese [46] , and the English version was broadcast via the Nintendo of America and regional Twitter accounts. The next day, the Nintendo Treehouse event was held, at which the launch line of games for Switch was announced [47] .

Switch was officially released on March 3, 2017 worldwide, with the exception of parts of Asia, including India and mainland China. [48] It was retailed in Japan at a price of 29,980 yen, in North America at a price of 299.99 US dollars, in the United Kingdom at a price of 279.99 pounds, and in Australia at a price of 469.95 Australian dollars. In Russia, the prefix came out at a price of 22,499 rubles [5] . At the same time, standardized prices for the European market varied [49] [50] [51] . The kit included the Switch prefix itself, a docking station, two Joy-Con controllers (left and right) and straps for them, a handle for the Joy-Con, an AC adapter and an HDMI cable [52] [53] . At launch, two sets of consoles were available, one with gray Joy-Con, the other with neon red and blue Joy-Con [54] . Nintendo feared that a higher price would hurt sales, prompting her not to include additional equipment or games [55] .

Update

In March 2019, The Wall Street Journal , citing its sources, announced the release of two more versions of the console in the summer of 2019. According to the publication, one of the updated models will be more powerful, and the second will become a cheaper version of Switch, which, according to Nintendo's plans, should become the successor to the outdated portable 3DS game console [56] .

Boost Mode

In April 2019, after the update of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (in connection with the release of the VR helmet), the game began to load 30-40% faster, the same applied to Super Mario Odyssey . The Boost mode was found by enthusiasts, which is likely to work in most games.

Nintendo Switch Lite

On July 10, a video with the announcement of Nintendo Switch Lite appeared on the official Nintendo YouTube channel. The new version of the console will be deprived of Joy-Con and the docking station, as well as HD-vibration. For some games, you will need to buy a separate pair of Joy-Con . 3 colors are available: gray, blue and yellow. Sales will begin on September 20, 2019 . The console will cost $ 199. [57]
