Biography
Boris Samuilovich Stein was born in 1933 in Leningrad . He graduated from the 222nd secondary school of the Kuibyshevsky district (former Petrishule ) in 1951 and entered the Higher Naval Engineering School of Communications named after A. S. Popova (VVMUS) . After graduation, he served on ships and at the base of the Baltic Fleet in the city of Paldiski , where he began to print his poems and lyrical prose first in the naval newspaper “On Watch” and then in Estonian periodicals. He published the first Swan Island poetry collection in Tallinn in 1966 .
After dismissal from military service in 1973, he worked as a radio operator at the BAM construction site, as a lumberjack, as a mechanic docker in the Tallinn Sea Port, as an elephant trainer, was entrenched in the theater [1] . Being a litconsultant of the Russian section of the Union of Writers of Estonia, he translated poetry of Estonian poets into Russian. Then he met Sergei Dovlatov, who worked in Tallinn as a journalist [2] . From 1961 to 1989 he was a member of the CPSU. Member of the Union of Writers of the USSR since 1972 .
Subsequently, he lived in Israel , in the city of Ashkelon , where he continued his literary activities [3] .
Awards and Prizes
He was awarded with medals of the USSR, the sign "For a long trip" [4] .
Interesting Facts
The character of the collection of short stories by Sergey Dovlatov “ Compromise ” (the novel “Compromise fifth”). In addition, Stein’s service in the Baltic Fleet is dedicated to the story of Mikhail Weller “The Ocean” from the collection “ Legends of Nevsky Prospect ”.
Boris Stein was a nephew of the Soviet writer, playwright, laureate of two Stalin Prizes, Alexander Stein .
