Biography

Born in Ryazan on March 28, 1983. When he was two months old, the family moved to the Stavropol Territory. In childhood, he was engaged in boxing, kickboxing, wushu sanda and hand-to-hand fighting. Trained with Athanasius Kimeniniko in the Sports Palace "Spartak" (Stavropol) [1] .

In 1999, at the age of 16, he moved to Spain [1] .

Professional career

He moved to professional boxing while living and training in Spain. The trainer is Ricardo Sanchez Atocha [1] .

He made his debut in the professional ring on November 10, 2000. Won on points [2] .

On October 20, 2007, he lost on points to the German Vitaly Tybert [3] . Judges' score: 75-77 and 74-78 (twice) [4] .

Championship fight with Marcos Maidana

September 23, 2011 he met with the world champion in the 1st welterweight champion according to the WBA Argentinean Marcos Maidana . Already in the 1st round, Petrov visited the floor. In the 4th round, after two more knockdowns, the referee stopped the fight. Petrov suffered an early defeat [5] [3] .

On April 13, 2013, he lost on points to the Montenegrin Dejan Zlatichanin . Judges' score: 110–118, 113–117, 114–116 [6] [7] [8] .

Boxcino 2014

In 2014, he won the ESPN Friday Night Fights tournament Boxcino Lightweight. During the tournament, Russian Fyodor Papazov [9] [10] , American Chris Rudd [11] [12] and Mexican Fernando Carcamo [13] [14] defeated.

On April 3, 2015, he won on points of the ex-world champion in the 2nd featherweight of the Mexican Gamaliel Diaz . Judges' score: 98–89 and 97–90 (twice) [15] [16] .

October 10, 2015 was to meet with the British Liam Walsh in a duel for the status of a mandatory contender for the world lightweight title according to the WBO [17] . However, Walsh suffered a hand injury and the fight was canceled [18] .

On May 6, 2016, he defeated former Mexican world lightweight champion challenger Marvin Quintero. After the 6th round, the referee stopped the fight, as Kintero had a large hematoma around his left eye [19] [20] .

September 30, 2016 defeated American Michael Perez. After the 6th round, Perez's coach took his boxer off the battle. Petrov became a mandatory contender for the world lightweight title according to the WBA [21] [22] [23] .

Championship fight with Terry Flanagan

In January 2017, it was announced that on April 8, Petrov would meet with the WBO World Lightweight Champion, defeated by Briton Terry Flanagan [24] [25] . Petrov walked forward, pressed and tried to impose an exchange of blows. Flanagan worked on counterattacks. Both athletes had good moments, but the Briton was more accurate. The fight lasted the whole distance. The judges unanimously gave victory to the current champion: 116-112, 120-108, 118-110 [26] [27] [28] .

On March 9, 2018, he lost by technical knockout in the 8th round to unbeaten Belarusian Ivan Baranchik . The fight bore the status of the eliminator of IBF in the 1st welterweight [29] [30] .
