Arched tire

Content

Arched tires are a type of special tubeless automobile tires with a profile in the form of an arch of considerable width [1] [2] [3] . Their main purpose is to increase the patency of vehicles when driving on soils with low bearing capacity (sands, wetlands, virgin snow, etc.) [1] .

General Description

A typical arched tire has a cross section in the form of an arch with variable curvature and low sides [2] . The ratio of the height of the profile of the arch tire to its width is in the range of 0.35-0.5; the profile width is 2.5-3.5 times greater than that of a conventional tire [2] . The frame of the arch tires is made of polyamide cord, strong and thin layer, with low bending resistance, as a result, the magnitude of the radial deformation of the arch tires is about 2 times higher [2] . The internal pressure is 0.005-0.15 MPa [2] .

As a rule, such tires are equipped with rarely planted powerful involute- shaped lugs over the entire profile width [1] [2] . Their total area can be about 17–35% of the total support area, the height can reach 35–40 mm, and the pitch between them is 100–250 mm [2] . In the central part of the tread pattern along the tire circumference there is a special belt consisting of one or several rows of lugs, the purpose of which is to reduce tire wear when driving on paved roads [2] .

Large width, high lugs, low pressure and elasticity of the arch tire contribute to the formation of a large contact area with the supporting surface area [2] . In addition, when rolling, such a tire has the property of compacting the soil towards the center of the contact zone, which in total gives a small specific pressure on the soil, low rolling resistance and the achievement of large values of the tensile moment on a soft surface [2] .

History

Developed in 1952 by Nicholas Straussler in the UK [4] [5] .

Application

Arched tires are used as a seasonal means of increasing patency; they are mounted only on the rear axles of trucks, one at a time instead of two conventional tires, which dramatically increases the ability of the equipment to overcome areas of soft soil [1] [3] .

The use of arch tires on roads with ordinary hard surface is highly discouraged [1] . When operating in mixed road conditions, the average resource of arched tires reaches 40–45 thousand km, and when driving on ordinary roads it decreases to 20–30 thousand km. [2] [3]
