Biography

Sophia was born in the estate Gravesnes ( Swede. Gräfsnäs) September 28, 1797. She and her four younger sisters received an education that was considered suitable for a noble woman before marriage: German, English, French, Italian, music, painting and dance, all taught by private teachers at home. They were taught religion, history and literature by the poet Arvid August Afzelius ( Swede. Arvid August Afzelius).

She lived in Stockholm with her mother and sisters since 1810, where she made her debut in society in the 1812-13 season. It was a particularly busy season in Stockholm, which is estimated to have influenced her and her work: she was introduced to Madame de Staël ( Swede. Madame de Staël), to whom she was deeply admired. She also watched "Racine and Corneille" performed by the French theater troupe, including the famous Margarita Georges expelled from Russia, as well as "live pictures" ( French tableaux vivants ) performed by Henrietta Handel-Schutz, which was a great success in Stockholm [ 2] .

In 1814, her father was ruined, and the family lived in limited conditions. In 1820, Sophia married Colonel Baron Sebastian von Knorring. Marriage has not greatly changed the economic situation in the family. After the wife was presented for the award, she followed him: since 1834, they have always lived in Axevall. Since 1827, Knorring suffered from consumption, and although she "struggled with her for a long time and successfully," she was forced to spend winters in a closed room, and eventually died from this [3] . Sophia was able to go abroad a couple of times: she visited Copenhagen in 1838, as well as Germany and Austria in 1846.

Literary heritage

Along with Carl Jonas Louv Almqvist, August Blanche, Fredrick Bremer and Emilia Fligare-Karlen, Sophia von Knorring was at the forefront of Swedish realistic literature of the 1830s and 1840s.
