Biography
Born in the village of Komarovka, Brest region, Brest region of the Belorussian SSR (now the Republic of Belarus).
The first years of life passed in the occupation. He spent his childhood and school years in his native village.
In 1959 he graduated from high school and enrolled in the Kremenchug school of primary training for pilots, and then became a cadet at the Chernigov Higher Military School for Pilots named after the Lenin Komsomol . In 1964 he graduated with honors. Then he served in the aviation units of the Soviet Army. Member of the CPSU since 1963.
Enrolled in the cosmonaut corps in 1965 . He completed a full course of general space training and preparation for space flights on Soyuz-type ships and Salyut-type orbital stations. He made three space flights as a crew commander. The first space flight took place from December 18 to 26, 1973, together with flight engineer VV Lebedev on the Soyuz-13 spacecraft. The flight duration was 7 days 20 hours 55 minutes 35 seconds.
In January 1975, he was a member of the reserve crew of the Soyuz-17 spacecraft. In April 1975, he was a backup for the commander of the ship during the unsuccessful launch of the Soyuz-18-1 ship. He made his second space flight from May 24 to July 26, 1975, together with flight engineer V. I. Sevastyanov, on the Soyuz-18-2 spacecraft to the Salyut-4 orbital station. The duration of the stay in space was 62 days 23 hours 20 minutes 8 seconds. In the future, I was preparing for flights under the Intercosmos program.
He made his third space flight from June 27 to July 5, 1978, as the commander of an international crew together with research astronaut, citizen of the People’s Republic of Poland M. Germaszewski on the Soyuz-30 spacecraft to the Salyut-6 orbital station for joint work with her crew - V.V. Kovalenok and A.S. Ivanchenko . The duration of the stay in space was 7 days 22 hours 2 minutes 59 seconds.
In just 3 flights, 78 days 18 hours 18 minutes 42 seconds flew into space.
From March 30, 1976, he was the deputy commander of the CPC cosmonaut group for political affairs, and from January 24, 1978, he was the deputy head of the CPC and head of the political department of the Center. On April 3, 1991, in connection with the dissolution of political agencies in the army, he was transferred to the post of head of the military-political department, deputy head of the CPC. From September 12, 1991 to September 2003 - Head of the Cosmonaut Training Center named after Yu. A. Gagarin.
