Figurative painting with elements of surrealism has become very popular in Europe in recent years. The gloomy paintings of Neo Rauch created a real boom around the Leipzig school and brought millions to their author.

Creative Path of the Cold Artist
Rauch annually paints a dozen paintings in an atelier located in the building of a former textile factory in Leipzig. Connoisseurs of the New Leipzig School brand await them with awe. Buyers, especially Americans, are ready to set a price even before the artist’s brush touches the canvas. Exhibitions and sales of the once-opened gallery owner Harry Libke ( German: Harry Libke ) are empty a few minutes after the opening.
“Rauch makes clear pictures ,” concludes the German newspaper Bild . In fact, this is only at first glance. One can easily “recognize” people, trees, cars, weapons, but one can hardly attribute his manner to realism or to socialist realism. The style resembles, on the one hand, the official art of the former GDR, and on the other, comics and American advertising of the 60s.
Theories, concepts, abstractions, despite their great importance for German art, never interested him. “It’s harder to create a good figured composition than an abstract image. I could become an outstanding abstractionist, but it's boring, ”Rauch said in an interview with Spiegel . The artist's painting represents a strange world, the colors and images Rauch took from the aesthetics of socialist realism in East Germany , where he grew up and received his education.
