Biography
Karl Johann Lash studied painting at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts , under the direction of E. Bendeman . Then, on the recommendation of a teacher, from 1844 at the Munich Academy of Arts , he studied under J. Schnorr von Karolsfeld and Wilhelm von Kaulbach , and painted several historical paintings that drew public attention to him.
Having made, in 1847, a trip to Italy , where he studied the works of old and modern masters, he came to Moscow /
In 1848 - 1857 lived in Moscow, spent about ten years in it, successfully engaged in portraiture , as a result of which his works in this genre are often found in Russia.
Then he settled in Paris , where in 1857-1859 he studied under the guidance of artist-academician T. Couture . Here he wrote almost the best of his works: “ Tintoretto and his daughter” and “ Venus and Tannhäuser ” . The first of these paintings, together with Lasha’s other work, “ Saint Cecilia, ” was presented in 1860 at an academic exhibition in St. Petersburg , and for them he received the title of Honorary Free Communion of the Imperial Academy of Arts .
Shortly thereafter, he moved permanently to Düsseldorf and painted there, besides portraits, genre paintings , which German art critics praised with great praise, as works that differ in their smart choice of subjects and strong color.
In 1869, German Emperor William I awarded him the title of professor of painting.
In 1872, the Lash Berlin Academy of Arts was awarded a large gold medal.
He was a professor at the Düsseldorf Academy of Arts , an honorary member of the Academies of Vienna and Dresden .
Karl Johann Lash died in the city of Moscow, where he came to see relatives.
