History
In 1333, a Catholic parish with its priest existed in Bechkerek (the historical name of Zrenjanin). This parish was destroyed during the Ottoman rule. The re-founding of the Catholic parish took place after the expulsion of the Turks in 1722, the first temporary chapel for Habsburg soldiers was opened in 1723. In 1758, on the orders of Empress Maria Theresa , the construction of a brick Catholic church in the Baroque style began , which was completed in 1762-1763 [1] .
By the middle of the XIX century, the church in Bechkerek came into an unusable state, the bell tower threatened to collapse. The building was destroyed in 1863, and the next year the construction of a new temple began [2] . The construction was carried out at the expense of the treasury and personal funds of Bishop Sandor Bonnaz, completed in 1868 with the consecration of the church in the name of St. John of Nepomuk [1] . The temple was built in neo-Romanesque style .
The image of St. John Nepomutsky in the center of the main altar and the image of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the right altar were created by the prominent Hungarian artist Bertalan Székéy , and the altar image of the left altar, the holy Apostle Jacob, was performed by the artist August Mantler [1] . Other interior decoration of the church was made under the direction of the local artist Jozsef Goigner. The organ currently installed in the temple was made in Temeshwar in 1907 [3] .
Architecture
Cathedral of St. John of Nepomuk represents in plan a Latin cross with a transverse transept . On the north side, a semicircular apse adjoins the main volume, the main south facade is crowned by a high tower above the entrance [2] .
All three historical altar images have been preserved and adorn the interior of the temple. The vaults are richly painted with scenes from the Bible: the Holy Trinity, Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane, Christ blesses the children, Christ teaches the people, Ascension of the Virgin Mary, David with a gusel surrounded by angels. The walls are also frescoed on biblical themes by Jozsef Heugner [2] .
