Biography
The representative of the Polish magnate family Potocki coat of arms " Pilyava ". The son of the captain of the royal Nicholas Potocki (d. 1642 ) and Catherine Maurozzi (d. After 1669). Brother - Colonel Stanislav Pototsky.
Member of the defense of the Zbarazh (July 10-25, 1649 ). He headed his own Cossack banner, which was part of the regiment of Kravchev Crown Nikolai Ostrog . After the conclusion of the Zborowsky Treaty ( August 22, 1649 ) between the Polish government and Bogdan Khmelnitsky, Jan Karol Potocki and Sokalsky Warden Sigmund Dengoff were transferred as captives to the Crimean Tatars, the allies of Bogdan Khmelnitsky, in order to guarantee the payment by the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth of the promised sums of money. During his stay as a captive in Bakhchisarai, Jan Karol Potocki made friends with Subhan Gazi-aga, who led the campaign against the Polish possessions in 1656 .
In April 1650, Jan Karol Potocki returned from captivity to his homeland, where he became the captain of a Cossack gonfalon of 100 horsemen. His banner was part of the regiment of the governor of Podolsk Stanislav Revere Pototsky . In the winter and spring of 1651, Jan Karol Potocki participated in an expedition to Ukraine of the Polish army under the command of the hetman of the full crown Martyn Kalinovsky . Then he participated in battles with the Cossacks near Berestechko and the White Church . On June 11, 1652, at the Seymic in Vladimir , the Volyn noblemen recommended rewarding him for military merits. During the Swedish invasion of Poland in 1655, Jan Karol Potocki joined the delegation sent to the Swedish king Karl X Gustav from the subordinate quartz army of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. On March 28, 1661, Jan Karol Potocki was elected ambassador to the Sejm and became a member of the Zaporizhzhya forces committee. In 1663 - 1664, he participated in the unsuccessful expedition of the Polish king Jan Casimir Waza to the Left-Bank Ukraine. He belonged to a group of captains who enjoyed the support of the royal court. During this period, Potocki was responsible for the implementation of some missions of the Polish command. During the Roshosh Jerzy Sebastian of Lubomirsky, Jan Karol Potocki remained faithful to the Polish crown. Even before the abdication of the throne of Jan Casimir, Potocki received the post of sub-committee of Bratslavsky as a reward for his military merits.
In 1669, Jan Karol Potocki was a deputy from the Bratslav Voivodeship at the Electoral Diet, and signed the electoral process (election to the throne) of Prince Mikhail Koribut-Wisniewiecki . In 1671 and 1672, he was twice elected ambassador to the Sejm.
