1059 athletes from 47 European countries (565 men and 494 women) took to the start in 44 disciplines of the championship [1] .

The Russian team did not participate in the tournament, suspended from international competitions since November 2015 due to a doping scandal . Only two Russian athletes who got to the start as neutral athletes received special permission from the European Athletics Association to participate in the tournament. Kristina Sivkova took sixth place in the 100 meter race, and Claudia Afanasyeva became the champion in walking 20 km [2] .

Two gold medals at the championship were won by the representative of Turkey of Kenyan origin Yasemin Jan , who won the distances of 5,000 and 10,000 meters with championship records. The Norwegian Karsten Warholm became a two-time prize winner in individual disciplines, adding to the silver in the 400 meters race a confident victory in the 400 meters hurdles [3] .

2016 Olympic champion Sarah Kolak in Bydgoszcz also won the javelin throw.
