Neo-geo (neo-geometric conceptualism, English. Neo-Geo ) - one of the directions in the abstract art of the XX century. The neo-geo style arose in American art in the early 80s and is often seen as a continuation of the traditions of pop art, not so much a classic geometric abstraction of the first half of the 20th century. Neo-geo is an abstraction of the postmodern era, rejecting both the utopian ambitions of Malevich or Mondrian , and the extremely personal and dramatic principle of abstract expressionism .
Neo-geo founder and theorist Peter Helly thinks his own canvases not as an ideal model of the superhuman universe, but not as a splash of his own subconscious. In his paintings, he proposes to see not even abstract constructions, but a kind of diagrams and graphs of modern society : squares and rectangles as all kinds of “cells of society”, lines as social connections and communication networks. As befits a postmodernist , in his vision of the present, Peter Helly is inspired by the ideas of the French philosopher Jean Baudrillard , in particular, the concept of media hyperreality that has replaced the physical reality.
