American Dance Festival

American Dance Festival ( eng. American Dance Festival , abbreviated ADF ) is an annual summer six-week festival of contemporary dance and a simultaneous six-week educational program organized at Connecticut College in 1948 . Since 1978 , held at Duke University and the in the city of Durham ( North Carolina ) [1] . For adolescents 12-16 years old, an abbreviated three-week school is held. In winter, there are also short weekly programs in New York and Pasadena (California).

Content

History

The Bennington Festival is considered the forerunner of the American Dance Festival - a summer program of Bennington College , which existed in Vermont from 1934-1942. The festival was organized by , a dancer of the , who became the head of the dance department of this newly organized women's college in 1932. Here, the pioneers of modern dance , such as , Martha Graham , Doris Humphrey , taught and showed their new choreographic works. In 1939, the program moved to Oakland (California), where Jose Limon made his debut as a choreographer, but returned to Vermont the following year. The last festival was held in the summer of 1942 [2] .

In 1948 , by analogy with the Bennington Festival, a similar summer program was created at Connecticut College in New London (Connecticut). Initially, the official name was the American Dance Festival of the New York University - Connecticut College Dance School ( New York University - Connecticut College School of Dance / American Dance Festival ). In 1969, the newly appointed director of the festival, Charles Reinhart, shortened the title to the more concise “American Dance Festival”. In 1978 , after 30 years on the campus of Connecticut College, the festival moved to North Carolina , on the campus of Duke University .

The festival demonstrates both the repertoire performances of contemporary dance companies and the premieres ordered by the festival and prepared by choreographers during the educational process. Among the speakers were the following companies: Jose Limon , Pearl Lang , , , , Merce Cunningham , , Paul Taylor , Alvin Ailey , , , Meredith Monk , Twyla Tharp , Trisha Brown , , , , , , , Pilobolus , duet and many others. Among foreign choreographers, Magi Maren , Anna Teresa de Keersmaker , , Shen Wei , Tatiana Baganova were invited .

The largest theater in Carolina, the , was built in part as a venue for festival performances [1] .

Educators and students

Among the teachers of the festival was a dancer and choreographer .

In 1978, among the students of the festival was Madonna , while studying at the University of Michigan [3] .

The ADF produced a number of humanitarian publications, including “Philosophical Dance Essays” (1981), “The Aesthetic and Cultural Significance of Contemporary Dance” (1984), “Black Tradition in American Contemporary Dance” (1988), and its sequel, “African American Genius Contemporary Dance ”(1993),“ Dances in Different Cultures ”(1995),“ Reflections on the Source of Art ”(1998), and“ Contemporary Dance, Jazz and American Culture ”(2000),“ Who is not afraid of Martha Graham? ”Gerald Myers (2008).
