Concert (Vermeer)

“Concert” is a painting by the Dutch painter Jan Vermeer , created between 1663-1666. In 1990, the painting was stolen from the Boston Museum of Isabella Stuart Gardner and her whereabouts are still not known [1] . The painting is considered the most expensive of the stolen and missing paintings, its cost is approximately estimated at 200 million dollars [2] .

The picture depicts three musicians: a girl plays the harpsichord , a man plays the lute and another girl sings. The harpsichord is decorated with paintings with a view of Arcadia . Another musical instrument lies on the floor - viola da gamba [3] .

On the wall of the room where the musicians are located, two paintings are hanging - “The Vault” Dirk van Baburen (she also appears in the picture “The Lady Sitting at the Virgin” ) and the pastoral landscape. Perhaps the paintings can reveal deeper relationships between the characters of the picture, they are absorbed in their music, so the surrounding details tell their story for them [4] . In Vermeer's painting, the musical theme often resonates with the theme of love and temptation (as, for example, in the painting “ Interrupted music lesson ”) [4] .

The painting was sold in 1696, after which nothing was known about it until 1780 [4] . In 1892, at an auction in Paris, it was bought by Isabella Stuart Gardner for 5 thousand dollars, since 1903 the work was exhibited in the museum she founded. On March 18, 1990, several thieves dressed as policemen stole 13 works from the museum, among them the Concert, searches for the painting yielded nothing, and now nothing is known of its whereabouts [3] [5] .
