Algology (from the Greek ἄλγος - pain, suffering + λόγος - teaching ) - a field of medicine that studies acute and chronic pain , its pathophysiology , nociception and antinociception systems , methods of dealing with pain, i.e. analgesic (analgesic) therapy , analgesics and their mechanisms actions.
Thanks to the success of modern algology, new methods have been discovered to combat chronic pain, which include the use of antidepressants , antipsychotics , tranquilizers and other classes of psychotropic drugs , prolonged epidural anesthesia, and the use of prolonged forms of opioid analgesics (fentanyl patch). This made it possible to significantly alleviate the condition of patients with severe chronic pain, in particular, cancer patients.
