History
At the site of the modern cathedral was originally a cemetery and probably a small chapel. In 1732, the cemetery was liquidated, and a small parish church was built on the site of the chapel. As Osijek grew and developed towards the end of the 19th century, it ceased to accommodate all parishioners [1] .
On the initiative of Archbishop Josip Juraj Straussmeier , a prominent figure in the Croatian national revival, the construction of a new church began on August 4, 1894 . The neo - Gothic church, designed by the German architect Franz Langenberg, was erected in four years, another two years were spent on the completion of the interior decoration, finally in 1900 Strossmayer consecrated the church in the name of the holy apostles Peter and Paul [2] .
In 1938-1942, the Croatian artist Mirko Ráčki created a series of frescoes on the walls and ceilings of the cathedral, illustrating episodes from the Old and New Testaments [1] .
During the Second World War, the temple was slightly damaged, and it also suffered during the earthquake in 1964. The temple suffered the most damage during the war in Croatia , when up to 100 shells fell into it during shelling of Osijek [1] . After the war, a gradual restoration of the temple began, which in general was completed, but some work continues to this day [2] .
On June 18, 2008, the Diocese of Djakovo-Srem was elevated to the status of Archdiocese-Metropolis and renamed the Archdiocese of Dzhakovo-Osijek , while St. Peter's Basilica in Dzhakovo became the cathedral of the archdiocese, and the Osieki church of Sts. Peter and Paul received the status of co-cathedral [3]
