Geography

Pechora Basin

Length - 531 km, basin area - 31,000 km². Izhma originates in the south of the Timan Ridge, flows to the northwest. In the upper reaches the banks are covered with forest , in the lower reaches there are more meadows and swamps along the banks. The channel is winding, in the upper and middle reaches in the channel there are rapids and rocky rifts . The largest threshold - Selem-Kosyet (Heart) - is located below Sosnogorsk . From the mouth of Ukhta Izhma is navigable. In the lower reaches, Izhma expands greatly, the current weakens, the river begins to form channels , backwaters and large islands. It flows into Pechora near the village of Ust-Izhma .

The largest tributaries are Sedyu , Ukhta , Kedva (left); Ayyuva , Sabys (right).

Near the mouth of Izhma in the settlement of Pogany Nos a series of objects of the 11th – 12th centuries was found: an iron ax with a wide symmetrical blade, a spearhead, arrowheads, a chair with a bronze hilt, which belonged, presumably, to the Novgorod tribute collectors [2] .

Settlements

In the upper reaches, it flows through the village of Verkhneizhemsky , in the middle reaches, at the confluence of the Ukhta River in Izhma, the city of Sosnogorsk, which was called Izhma until 1957, is located. The city of Ukhta is located 8 kilometers from Sosnogorsk above the Ukhta River. At the mouth of the Suzu tributary on the left bank of Izhma is the village of Akim .
